A letter to 2021

Dear 2021,

As you get ready to depart, I have a few last words I’d like to say to you. You came in like a teeny-tiny ray of sunshine peeping through our curtains on a rainy morning after a week of thunderstorms. The world had plans to fulfill and we were still trying to make sense of everything 2020 left us with. Humanity looked forward to your arrival.

Even before we could welcome you, we already began to feel the world shift. Amid all the chaos and havoc, you reminded us to keep an open mind, as a last resort to retain our sanity. You reminded us that we needed to be open to change, because that, of course, is our only constant companion through all tops and turns of life. You taught us to befriend change and not to be afraid of it.

As we moved on through the year, life felt stagnant, many a time. No one could predict what was coming nor had any idea of what just went by. During this time, we learned to look around and appreciate life, as it is. You taught us that between yesterday and tomorrow, only today is in our hands, and to make the best of it, is our responsibility. To create memories and collect moments, to be there for people who matter and to do things that matter, to just be there for yourself, and to take time to be youthful is what life is all about.

The world showed us a lot of different ways to get by, but you put things into perspective and made us take a hard look at life and choose our ‘why’ to every ‘how’, ‘when’, ‘where’, and ‘who’. It is a life of our own to make, and to compare it to any other is an elaborate act of utter stupidity and insolence.

In the end, I just want to thank you for stopping by… maybe I did not like you as much as I thought I would, but you taught me what was essential to learn, and I think you taught well. The world was there before we came, and will be here long after we’re gone. Our only job is to leave it better than we found it. We’re not there yet but we shall try.

Seasons

This story is of the day when the seasons changed for the first time on planet Earth. Summer has just passed, and it was monsoon now. The rain was pouring down heavily, as though announcing its arrival. An old, wise cloud was floating above the forest when he saw a dejected tree sitting there with its trunk drawn down. So the old cloud called out to the tree, “Hey there kiddo! Not enjoying these new rains, are we?”

The tree looked up with teary eyes and said, “No sir, I’m alright.”

“Come on! You can talk to me… . Believe me, I’ve seen more stuff than you’ve ever imagined”, said the cloud in a deep, calming voice.

The tree said, “I knew this was coming… . The change… from summer to monsoon. And I thought I was prepared for it, I really was Mr. Cloud. But now that it is finally here, I’m falling apart. I don’t think I can do this. It’s so different, uncomfortable… and new.”

The old cloud replied with a gentle crease of confusion on his forehead, “But there’s a word in the woods, saying you weren’t really happy with the summer either, is that true kiddo?”

“Um… Yes sir. But that was because the summer sun was too hot, some of my leaves got burnt because of it too. And my roots did not get enough water because all the other trees took up most of it. It always felt like there wasn’t enough space for all of us… . And now it feels like there’s too much space. The sun doesn’t come out anymore and it’s always so cold and gloomy. I miss my friends, the rain drowned some of them, and some got carried away farther with the river… . I’ll never make new friends”, cried the tree, putting her trunk down.

“Don’t cry, it’s alright”, said the cloud hugging the tree, “Summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and then summer again… . Seasons change kiddo, and you can accept it and learn to be happy in all of them… . And that is all you can do. You can’t hold on to one season for life. Even the same season in a different place, or at different time is not the same. So instead of waiting for a particular season to be happy, why not make the best of each season, and be your own happiness? Your burns from summer hurt even more when the rain falls on them, because sometimes you need to hurt to truly heal. All of these are phases in your life, and they are going to give you new and different experiences. Not all of these will be good, but the bad ones will teach you what you need to learn and make you wiser. So take them all with you, and don’t be afraid to try new things. It’s all a part of growing up. Now wipe your tears, and enjoy the rain, it’ll bless your heart, I promise.”

The tree then danced in the rain, and finally understood that it was not the seasons, but her own self that made her the happiest. She did not need any particular season to be happy, she was happy and content in all of them. She was her own constant in the forever-changing seasons in life.

THE END

-Samridhi

Yours truly

Today, I sat down in front of the mirror, and closed my eyes…

And when i opened them again,

I saw something more brilliant than summer skies.

Curly strands of black hair adorned her forehead

Her dark brown eyes , long lashes complemented

They were like pools of honey in sunlight

and if you looked close enough,

You could see all the sadness ,on which the happiness lied

I can tell you, she thought her nose was too big, and her ears too small

but if you’d seen the way it crinkled when she laughs,

I bet you would want to show her, what you saw.

I want to tell you about her charming smile,

It was like warm cup of coffee on a cold winter night.

Ever so comforting, ever so nice.

Her hands, oh so soft and delicate.

But the way they held her dreams in that small fist,

I know she would fulfil them, she was so passionate.

I want to thank her, this girl

sitting in front of me…

Thinking if she’s good enough, trying to flee

Thank her, for making me brave, making me strong

showing me the places I went wrong.

Her precious heart that is beating for me,

for keeping me alive, passionate and free.

I love you, and I’ll keep you safe…

Our journey is long, so be brave.

On her way

Its been a long journey,
and she’s come somewhere.
But now she’s barely the her,
she knew, before she got there..

It’s a good thing,she tries to tell herself…
although she’s does miss the old her, when she was twelve.
She’s braver, more courageous now,
yet occasionally the ghosts of her past still haunt her somehow.

This place , is exactly where she’s meant to be,
but old habits die hard and she is no anomaly.
All the battles, all the scars, all the barriers she broke to get to the stars,
dont let her forget a reality thats no more her part.

But she’s a warrior, like she always was,
and no more does she let things get to her heart.
The walls are high and the gates are barred,
but the heart within, remains unarmed.

Breathe

Why are you running,

What for, towards what?

Why do you want it all in no time?

Why don’t you savour the moment anymore,

Like you did when you were nine?

I know you’ve got a lot do,

Everyday, you achieve something new…

You’re moving fast, you’re growing up,

You have no time to waste, not a second or two.

But wait.

Stop!

Breathe.

Look around…

How will you take the sunsets to heaven?

And what about the pink skies you loved to melt in?

All I’m saying is take sometime

For the people who make you smile,

For things that slow down the time,

For the things you loved as a kid,

And for the things, you never did…

Because I don’t think, you find these up there.

Every dream has a price

I don’t have the pictures,

Or the calender of dates,

Of the moments I’ve lost

To catch up with my mates.

I miss the laughter,

We forgot to capture…

The days they promised they would always stay…

To the days they silently walked away.

I miss the noble love,

That started with a ‘hi’,

Also the wretched one,

That ended without a ‘goodbye’.

I fear missing out on the time that has not yet come

And the sorrows to which we will soon succumb.

I miss the time when I was gone,

Yet if I had a second chance, I’d still be gone.

I’ve lost count of the things I miss…

All of which, kill me with my old bliss.

Never alone (3)

‘I need no money,

Nor I’ve got anything funny…

But the pleasures hiding within these flowers…

Aah! Something felt only by lovers….’

‘Love is bad! Stay away!

Or get ready to be betrayed.’

‘Its ok to wander once or twice

To finally know the way…’

Was it a miracle or a mirage?

He knew not but didn’t urge.

So full did he suddenly feel..

A string of tears fell like beads

Now he knew that all he had

Was ‘the holy house, the sacred sand,

The beautiful river and the loving hand..’

The end ๐Ÿ™‚

Never alone (2)

While walking to the grave one day,

He noticed a man, just sitting stray.

He wore only rags and had no money,

But his smile was all so sunny.

A twinkle in the eyes, a face fully wrinkled,

But not a part looked even a bit frazzled.

He suddenly asked in a jolly voice,

“Hey kid, all ok?”

Didn’t want to say but words flew out

“Don’t ask me that, I’m tired of lying.”

He sat down on the bench beside.

Something swept over him, he suddenly cried.

He asked the man,

“Tell me what makes you happy?

You haven’t got anything snappy!”

The man’s expression remained the same

Like a child, without blame.

…just a lil more to go๐Ÿ˜Š

Never alone (1)

The holy house, the sacred sand,

The beautiful river and the loving hand

Are they real or just a mirage

He finally asked with a charge.

Poor lad, once betrayed

Found it so hard to have his trust laid.

‘Love is a drug, oh so bad…

Never leaves you the same, once had’

Had his parents, had his friends,

But was lonely all his days.

All he knew was a life unfair,

Full of tyranny and despair.

He looked at the sky,

He looked at the stars..

A feeling of happiness he thought would pass.

…. To be continued ๐Ÿ™‚

Paradise

Make falling a habit,

Only then will you learn to get up.

You may fall once, you may fall twice

But get up stronger everytime.

Dont stand there waiting for help

Cos even your shadow leaves you in despair.

Dont wait. Dont stare.

Take a deep breath n pull up the gear.

You know you’ve got

The wings of fire,

A dream of peace,

And A mind of ice.

With these u build your paradise.
